WHO: BackPack Cliq
FROM: Miami, Florida by the way of Delray Beach, Florida
GENRE: Rap, Alternative
BackPack Cliq is one my new found favorite alternative rap groups out of South Florida. Their style and music is unmatched, especially in the South Florida “hip hop” music scene and they definitely stand out in a crowd. The first time I heard about them was from Claudio and Lex of Frais Culture clothing, who also happen to be their managers. Clearly, when you look at them, the first thing you notice is that they are visually different from the average “rappers” you might come across on a daily basis. This is by no means anything negative. It’s actually quite refreshing and the fact that it’s so natural to them instead of forced in hopes of standing out solidifies their authenticity.
Being a person that’s been disappointed over and over again when seeing “rappers” perform live, people know that I’d rather listen to “rap music” on the iPod than to kill my spirits of ever listening to their music again after hearing them perform live. BackPack Cliq is that sigh of relief and inkling of hope that the art of performing well among hip hop artists isn’t dead. I had the chance to see them perform live for Miami Renaissance by the Chunky Chickz at The Stage this year where their creative performance and meeting them in person officially made me a fan of the group. For an “up and coming” act, they perform well together and while it’s obvious that they’re even more different individually, they’re amazing as a unit.
Their BPC Cypher has over 64,000 views on YouTube. They currently have a single out called “Make Her Say”, which I find myself humming and singing “money make me cum” sporadically at the most random times of the day. Jeano of BPC is also featured on Colombian merengue artist, Manu’s, single “Por Los Dos”, which has become my independent replacement favorite for Don Omar’s “Danza Kuduro”.
I can’t wait to witness the future of BackPack Cliq as they command the stage for years to come with their amazing talent and be successful because of their humbleness and hard work. I definitely see them having not only a presence in hip hop but also having a successful run in other genres of music because of their fearlessness to be bold and different by being themselves.
